This appointment includes indefinite tenure on a 9-month basis at 1.00 FTE at the rank of Professor in an appropriate unit of the College of Agricultural Sciences. The Director provides overall leadership and administration of OIPMC , including fiscal and personnel oversight, ensures high quality extension and research programs at the OIPMC , fosters research and outreach efforts of the staff, establishes priorities and long range plans, works with external advisory committees and participates in community and industry meetings. The Director oversees a center with potential for over 5+ employees and over 50 OSU affiliated faculty from across the state. The Director provides fiscal oversight for center budget (currently over $1 million in state and contract support) encompassing faculty, personnel, and research at multiple locations, and aims to maintain current support while seeking new sources of funding. The incumbent is expected to maintain applied scholarly activity in relation to research and/or outreach. The incumbent promotes collaboration among on- and off-campus faculty, other departments, branch stations and industry in agriculture and natural resources disciplines. The Director will establish and maintain strong ties with stakeholders, will be a recognized national and international leader in integrated pest management. The incumbent must demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. This position reports to the Associate Dean for Extension of the College of Agricultural Sciences. Position Duties 35% OUTREACH AND ENGAGEMENT
Work collaboratively with research and Extension faculty, agencies, and industry in developing and delivering science-based IPM information to stakeholder groups, including university-based faculty, in Oregon and across the nation. Coordinate statewide requests for presentations on pertinent issues to stakeholder and special interest groups. Work cooperatively with stakeholders through outreach programs, conferences and workshops, and in collaboration with College of Agricultural Sciences Extension programs across Oregon counties to advance IPM in Oregon. Demonstrate a commitment to student and learner success. 30% ADMINISTRATION
Lead and manage the OIPMC in the conduct of outreach and research programs in order to increase adoption of integrated pest management principles in Oregon's agricultural and natural resources disciplines. Engage and cooperate with the Agricultural Experiment Station ( AES ) administration, OSU Extension, OIPMC advisory board, all Departments associated with the activities of OIPMC , the public, and stakeholders.
Participate in priority staffing and hiring of IPM -related faculty and staff across all relevant departments (especially including Botany and Plant Pathology, Crop and Soil Science, Environmental and Molecular Toxicology, and Horticulture) and advise the College of Agricultural Sciences and the AES with regard to strategic pest issues and needs throughout the state and region.
Work closely with the faculty and staff state-wide in the IPM disciplines across CAS , and assure cooperation and collaboration with OSU Extension, other administrative units within the college, the Oregon Department of Agriculture, the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, US EPA , USDA , and other state and federal agencies as necessary. Collaboratively, maintain current funding streams while developing new sources of public and private sector funding for IPM . Manage budgets and review grants and accounting associated with the OIPMC program. Oversee hiring, supervision, and annual reviews in conjunction with the appropriate academic departments including Botany and Plant Pathology, Crop and Soil Science, Environmental and Molecular Toxicology, and Horticulture. Develop and supervise effective mentoring programs that ensure faculty success. Provide fiscal and administrative support to OIPMC . Demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity and inclusion. Develop effective internal and external communications. Oversee planning and goal setting for IPM ; develop and steward donors. Work collaboratively with the heads of other units to help ensure cross-college planning, coordination, joint programs, and other activities that advance the unit's mission. Establish the OIPMC as a widely recognized regional, national and international leader in integrated pest management sciences by establishing and effectively communicating a shared vision across the state.
Administer unit budgets annually. Provide leadership to faculty by supporting effective mentoring relationships and other processes to help them achieve their goals and mutual success. Serve as a representative of and spokesperson for the OIPMC with stakeholders and be ready to testify if requested by the Oregon Legislature. In addition, serve as an advocate for the OIPMC with stakeholders on and off campus.
Coordinate and facilitate research and outreach activities of OSU IPM programs including, but not limited to: assembling teams to address emerging issues related to pest management; assemble/lead/coordinate teams for large IPM grant RFPs, lead Extension IPM Issue Group; coordinate E-expert inquiries among agents/specialists, support annual IPM Summit; consult with state agencies to address pesticide-related challenges, and assemble and seek input from an Advisory Board (internal and external).
Facilitate the transfer of research information from the OIPMC to stakeholders and assist with applying and integrating this information in ways that clearly serve the needs of stakeholders at state, regional, national, and international levels. Serve as a conduit to address clientele/stakeholder needs through faculty research, teaching and Extension programs. Work in strong partnership with key organizations such as USDA NIFA , US EPA , Oregon Department of Agriculture, Oregon Department of Environmental Quality, Soil and Water Conservation Districts, Western IPM Center, agricultural commodities and organizations, environmental organization and other regional, national and international organizations, including counterparts at other universities. 25% RESEARCH AND SCHOLARLY ACTIVITIES
Develop and maintain a proportionate extramurally funded applied research program within area of IPM expertise. Consult and provide input on research as needed, and mentor undergraduate and graduate students undertaking research projects. 10% UNIVERSITY AND COLLEGE SERVICE
Develop and maintain cooperative relationships with professional organizations and agencies that have interests in IPM -related sciences. Serve on state, regional, and national advisory committees as appropriate to position responsibilities. Serve on College of Agricultural Sciences and other University committees as appropriate and as requested by the Department, College, Extension Services, and the University. Minimum/Required Qualifications Ph.D. degree in weed science, entomology, integrated pest management, plant pathology, toxicology, weed science, pesticide science, or a closely related IPM discipline. A national/international record of scholarly achievement in research, Extension, and instructional and/or service activities within the IPM -related disciplines, commensurate with the rank of Full Professor with Tenure. Demonstrated successful leadership in the strategic planning and management of a complex organization or research program. Skilled at bridging gaps between basic and applied research, and between research and Extension in IPM , pesticides, and related disciplines. Demonstrated ability to lead and coalesce diverse groups of faculty from different IPM disciplines and across units to accomplish statewide goals and challenges. Clear understanding and commitment to the mission of land grant institutions. Outstanding professional and collaborative leadership. Success in securing internal and external programmatic support for instruction, research, service or outreach. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Demonstrated capacity to work with a diverse group of faculty, staff, students, and stakeholders in public agencies and private organizations, growers, volunteers, and the public. Demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. Ability to travel extensively within Oregon.
