This recruitment will be used to fill one full-time Microbiologist 1 position for the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory in the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University (OSU). The Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory (OVDL) is an integral part of the Oregon State University Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine and provides diagnostic services for the college, practicing veterinarians in the state and region, wildlife officials, and livestock, poultry and pet owners. The purpose of this position is to assist this diagnostic service by performing and interpreting a variety of standard bacteriological and parasitological laboratory tests and correlating their results. Position Duties 70% BENCHWORK: Log test requests in a laboratory information management system (LIMS) and contact clients if clarification is needed. Determine correct procedure for set-up and culture processing of diagnostic samples (e.g. swabs, fluids, tissues etc.) based on laboratory standard operating procedures (SOP). Prepare necessary equipment, media, supplies and reagents needed for cultures and stains. Perform standard testing for identification of aerobic/anaerobic bacteria and fungi and perform antimicrobial sensitivity testing (Kirby-Bauer). Correlates and interprets results. Log information into LIMS. Perform various parasitological tests for the identification of parasite pathogens in clinical specimens performed according to laboratory SOP. Notifies supervisor immediately in cases of regulatory/reportable, noteworthy, or unusual results. Work with supervisor routinely for review of results and interpretations. Prepare forms and specimens for forwarding to other agencies. Help direct student technicians in proper techniques needed for procedures and work assignments. Use biological safety cabinets, anaerobe culture chamber, microscopes (bright field, dark-field, and fluorescent), incubators, balances, refrigerators, freezers, centrifuges, pipet aids, autoclaves, and/or bench top burner/incinerator to complete tasks. 10% MEDIA / REAGENT PREPARATION & INVENTORY Assist in the maintenance of accurate inventories of supplies, media, and microbial cultures. Keep complete and accurate records. Prepare specialized media and buffers. Oder supplies with supervisor approval. 15% QUALITY CONTROL Record equipment service records and performs minor routine maintenance as required, notifying supervisor when equipment is out of specifications. Perform miscellaneous cleaning and disinfection duties. Monitor routine work and quality control activities of the laboratory and informs supervisor of abnormalities. Review SOPs used in the laboratory. Make appropriate recommendations for the continuing correction and improvement of procedures. Participate in internal and external audits of the laboratory under the direction of the supervisor and Quality Manager. 5% OTHER DUTIES Stay current in the field by reading reviewing literatures, participation in inter-laboratory proficiency testing, attendance of scientific meetings/webinars/seminars, and or other available events. All training is documented in accordance with OVDL quality assurance requirements. This individual functions as part of an integrated team and intra-laboratory communication is important. Complete cross training and stay up to date. Complete other duties as assigned by the supervisor and according to the needs of the laboratory. Minimum Qualifications A Bachelor's degree with advanced courses in Bacteriology, Chemistry, and/or other biological fields which shows knowledge of microbiology theory, principles, and practices and laboratory procedures, equipment, and instruments; OR An equivalent combination of training and experience. itional Required Qualifications Understanding of the need for biosafety and biosecurity in a clinical laboratory. Understanding of the need for confidentiality in a clinical laboratory. This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard ************ et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have itional criminal history checks every 24 months. Preferred (Special) Qualifications One year of experience in a classical bacteriology/parasitology laboratory including experience performing antibiotic sensitivity testing using the disc-diffusion (Kirby-Bauer) method and the BIOMIC V3 reader. Documented proficiency in preforming classical microscopic and biochemical identification of bacteria and antibiotic sensitivity testing and used of laboratory equipment (e.g. microscopes, pipettors, centrifuges, biological safety cabinet). Demonstrated ability to work quickly with accuracy and precision. Demonstrated ability to multi-task effectively in a dynamic environment. Experience with an automated Gram staining instrument. Experience with a laboratory information management systems (LIMS). A demonstrable commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity. Working Conditions / Work Schedule This position is located in the Oregon Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory's Bacteriology and Parasitology section. This position requires working in a biological safety cabinet with clinical specimens and unknown cultures, including zoonotic pathogens. This position will be exposed to noxious odors on a daily basis. This position requires use of laboratory coats, closed toed shoes, and/or use of other personal protective equipment. This position may require overtime, evening, weekend, and/or work on holidays. A rabies vaccination is strongly recommended for this position in order to protect the safety of the incumbent and will be provided at the employer's expense (acceptance/declination at the discretion of the employee). This position is expected to behave in a professional and collegial manner that conveys respects to others in all interactions. This position is deemed essential and the incumbent may be expected to report to work during inclement weather, emergency and other University work curtailments or closures.
