The Center for Applied Systems & Software (CASS) is seeking a Systems Development Engineer. This is a full-time 1.0 FTE, 12-month, fixed term professional faculty position. Reappointment is at the discretion of the Director. As a part of the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science's efforts to provide experiential learning opportunities to students, the Center for Applied Systems and Software (CASS)'s Software Development Group (SoftDev) hires and trains students in developing all the necessary skills to provide quality software solutions to solve real world problems of its customers. This position is involved in enterprise software and systems engineering and requires considerable independent judgment. The individual in this position, and the student software development team that they manage, provide custom software solutions that support academic and non-academic units at OSU, as well as state agencies and other clients. The Systems Development Engineering position requires interacting with, leading, mentoring, and bringing together a diverse group of community members, including a variety of student team members. Work is varied and highly technical, utilizing state-of-the-art tools and technologies. The position is intellectually challenging, requires integration of a variety of technologies and technical writing skills, including but not limited to technical designs, requirements, specifications and test cases. The Systems Development Engineer position often acts as a team lead on multiple projects simultaneously across all aspects of the software engineering practice. Frequent client interaction and some introductory project management are essential Position Duties 40% Supervision, Instruction and Mentorship This position will supervise, instruct and mentor a team of CASS SoftDev student workers, including planning and scheduling work; setting priorities; monitoring work product quality; pair programming; providing feedback and instruction; helping with problem resolution; approving work; recruiting, hiring, training and mentoring. This position is also responsible for providing student workers formal reviews, rewards, raises and discipline as appropriate; evaluating and responding to student worker grievances; and otherwise supporting student learning and professional development. 30% Enterprise Analysis, Development, and Operations This position is ultimately responsible for the delivery of enterprise solutions to CASS customers within their project schedule and budget constraints. These solutions typically involve using state-of-the-art development tools and technologies in solving client problems as well as assisting in business process analysis and improvement. Create and document architecture; develop software and occasional hardware solutions; document and manage test plans and test cases; oversee and participate in QA processes; and deploy and maintain production systems. Work also includes the management of several database and Web Servers. Management of these systems includes security, performance and stability tuning. Position requires an understanding of complex systems and interactions between the operating system, the applications and the end user systems. Oversee development operations. Assign and assess junior developers' work. 20% Project and Client Management Considerable time is spent working with clients in the design and delivery of solutions. Utilize Agile and other adaptive methodologies to craft, revise, monitor and communicate project timelines, key delivery dates, release strategies, budget forecasting and utilization, and to manage client relationships. Oversee visioning, estimating, and planning projects with stakeholders; discovering and documenting requirements; and designing and documenting specifications when needed. 5% Problem Resolution This position is responsible for assisting in the maintenance of, and troubleshooting problems in the SoftDev development environment. In addition, this position is responsible for troubleshooting and resolving issues with production applications developed and hosted by CASS. 5% Professional Development This position is highly technical and is involved in designing and building solutions to varied problems as well as providing mentorship and training for students. As such, it is necessary to stay up-to-date on modern technologies and practices for software development. It is the responsibility of this position to keep abreast of modern tools, technologies and practices in order to stay proficient within the software engineering discipline. Minimum/Required Qualifications Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related discipline; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Demonstrable work experience using: Object Oriented Programming; Web Application Design and Development Business and Systems Analysis Demonstrable experience with modern server technologies, in particular, server operating systems and web server technologies. Demonstrable experience with modern desktop technologies, including desktop operating systems and maintenance. Effective communication skills and confidence to make presentations and participate in group discussions. Technical writing skills sufficient to write technical documentation, specifications documentation, test plan and test case documentation, software architecture modeling, and to model business process flows. Demonstrable experience and commitment to working with and bringing together a diverse group of people within a team environment. This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard ************ et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
