Job Description:

Oregon State University (OSU) seeks a paralegal to join the Office of the General Counsel (OGC) team.

The paralegal will join the OGC team in an energetic, collaborative office that provides legal advice to a broad range of university academic and administrative senior leadership and offices and to the university's Board of Trustees.
The OGC is a fast-paced high volume workplace responsible for the entire range of legal matters for the university including legal advising in such areas as labor and employment, civil rights, constitutional law, public records, public finance, student affairs, intellectual property, technology transfer, information technology, research transactions, design and construction transactions, procurement, purchasing and contract, real property matters, risk management and compliance.
The paralegal works independently in an environment that is highly sensitive and confidential, and critical to successful delivery of the university's mission. This position has access to highly sensitive, confidential information involving the entire spectrum of the university's legal affairs, and must maintain absolute discretion at all times. The paralegal work includes, but is not limited to intake and tracking of records; litigation and claims support; legal research; compiling required reports for federal and state agencies; tracking and compiling date for internal reporting; and software administration for systems for document, data, and email management.

  • Bachelor's degree or (if no Bachelor's degree) two years relevant experience
  • Ability to summarize, analyze, organize, track, and produce documents
  • Ability to locate, analyze and interpret statutes, rules, and policies
  • Ability to gather and analyze information and documentation collaboratively with other departments and outside agencies
  • Ability to manage and organize reposes to subpoenas and other records requests
  • Ability to move quickly between multiple, unrelated matters
  • Expertise using most MS Office programs and web browsers - familiarity with Adobe Professional
  • Demonstrated willingness and ability to learn new software and systems
  • Ability to learn new procedures quickly and follow those procedures consistently over time
  • Experience tracking and storing records
  • Superb judgement
  • Advanced analytical skills
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication skills
  • Demonstrated ability to work with a wide array of interpersonal and communication styles, as well as varying viewpoints and agendas
  • Demonstrated commitment to maintaining confidentiality, discretion, and diplomacy
  • Demonstrated commitment to promoting and enhancing diversity

    This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055- 0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
    Litigation experience
    Work experience in an Oregon University with a Governing Board or another higher education institution
