Save Skills - First Aid Certification - Driver's License - CPR Certification - Equine Experience The OSU Horse Center maintains horses for use in teaching, outreach and research. Boarding facilities are available to students of OSU as well. In order to ensure the health and safety of animals maintained at the Center, there must be knowledgeable individuals on site at all times. The herdsman is an important part of that and is expected to be on-site when the Director is not available. The Herdsman position, which is a year-round live-in position offers the opportunity for students to gain valuable work experience, management skills, prepare for a career in the horse industry and board their own horse for a reduced rate. Applicants selected for an interview will be contacted to schedule an appointment the week of September 2nd. Position Duties The 'Live-In, year-round' Herdsman must have: - extensive horse experience including the ability to recognize illness, colic, lameness or other ailments. - experience handling a wide variety of horses and temperaments including young horses. - aptitude to recognize behavior changes. - knowledge of feed identification and nutrition. - equine first aid skills including determinate of vital signs. 100% The Herdsman is expected to know and follow all procedures, rules and protocols. The Herdsman is not expected or allowed to make decision in place of management; however, they are expected to enforce the rules and protocols and set an example for other student employees and users of the facility. The Herdsman is expected to be available for late hour feeding, care and emergencies as they arise. In emergency situations, the Herdsman is expected to follow protocols and procedures as needed and notify the Director ASAP. A proactive role should be taken in the maintenance and care of the horses and the Horse Center Facility, Each Herdsman is required to work a minimum of 10 hours/week in crew, barn chores, feeding, etc. in exchange for pay. Other duties such as, but not limited to; nightly checks of all the animals and facilities, mid-day checks on weekends and holidays are performed in exchange for reduced rent. At least one Herdsman should be on site from 6pm to 7am daily, from 6pm to 7am Friday through Monday/weekends, 24 hours on holidays. This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard ************ et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in Youth Programs may have itional criminal history checks every 24 months. This position may require driving a University vehicle or personal vehicle on behalf of the University; Employees selected to drive as part of their assigned duties must successfully complete a Motor Vehicle History Check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver's license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per OSUStandard ************ et seq. Minimum Qualifications Employment Eligibility Requirements (***************************************************************************** itional Required Qualifications Applicant MUST be currently enrolled as a student at Oregon State University and/or dual enrolled with Linn Benton Community College taking a minimum of 6 credit hours per term. International students must be registered a minimum of 12 credit hours during the academic year per term. Graduate Students (self funded) must be registered a minimum of 3 credit hours during the academic year per term. Experience with basic farm management and equipment such as tractors and arena drags. First Aid and CPR are desirable. Working Conditions / Work Schedule Work is performed in barns and outdoors at the OSU Horse Center located on NW Walnut Dr. in Corvallis. Because the work location is off campus, employees must have reliable form of transportation to get to the horse center facilities. Employee may have exposure to noxious odors, infectious diseases, chemicals, loud noises, wet and slippery floors, or machinery. Employee will be exposed to inclement weather conditions. Employee will need to maneuver items that weigh up to 50 lbs. Employee will be required to stoop, bend and kneel on hard floors as necessary to provide care for animals.
